Understanding addiction and the simplicity of healing

First, let me explain what addiction is. Addiction is often forced into behavior that brings short-term relief but long-term harm in all areas of life (health, relationships, finances, and work, to name a few). The important word here is forced.

Addiction is a difficult challenge to overcome. Not because the addictive behavior is difficult to break once the addict realizes they have an addiction, but because the addiction is cloaked in denial and prevents the addict from seeing their behavior clearly.

Denial is created by the addict to protect them from the loss they think they will suffer if they quit the addictive behavior or substance. Perceive is a very important word here because the addict actually gains nothing at all from their addiction. Their addiction gradually and systematically destroys every area of ​​the addict’s life until only the addiction remains. As every area of ​​the addict’s life is slowly destroyed, the addict becomes more and more attached to the addiction because the addiction is found as a pleasure. The key to breaking any addiction is breaking the cycle of faulty thinking that keeps the addict trapped in the cycle. So the good news is that addiction is a lot easier to overcome than we all think.

First, let’s examine the addiction itself. Every addiction has the exact same roots, regardless of the substance or behavior that makes up the addiction. So, addiction can be from substances like alcohol, drugs, or food, or from behaviors like gambling or shopping. All addictions serve the same purpose, which is to change the way the addict feels. All addiction masks unresolved pain.

Thats how it works. The addict has a feeling. Now the feeling could be good or bad. Feeling good will make the addict celebrate. If they are addicted to food, they will celebrate by eating. An alcoholic will have a drink. A player will indulge in a little flutter. When the addict has a bad feeling, they will engage in addictive behavior to try to make themselves feel better. This is the paradox of addiction. A remedy for all feelings! So, of course, as the addictive behavior persists, it gains momentum (I’ll explain why in a moment) and becomes a bigger and bigger part of the addict’s life. In extreme cases, if it is allowed to continue, it becomes the only thing in the addict’s life.

Dependencies naturally pick up steam for a number of reasons. The first reason is that the addict perceives that they are receiving some kind of reward for their addiction. This is never the case. If you enjoy something, you can participate in the activity and feel better after doing it. An addict usually feels worse after the addictive behavior. A drinker will have a hangover, a shopper will feel guilty about the bills they now have to pay, an emotional eater will feel guilty about their last binge, etc change emotional state. When the bad feelings surface after their last indulgence, what’s the first thing you think they want to do? Yes! They will indulge in their addictive behaviors again to get rid of their unwanted feelings. This is obviously a downward spiral.

The second reason addictive behavior is gaining momentum is because it is used as a coping mechanism, but also as a celebration (at first anyway. When the addiction really kicks in, the desire to celebrate is gone). When we are healthy and balanced, we typically have a number of opportunities to change our emotional state. A few examples are taking a hot bath, meditating, reading, relaxing and watching a movie, chatting with friends, etc. The addict stops looking for new ways to solve challenges and relieve stress. They use their addiction for instant gratification. This leaves the addict with fewer and fewer coping mechanisms as the addiction becomes a bigger and bigger part of their lives.

The third reason addiction gains momentum is when the addiction is a substance rather than a behavior. When the substance is physically addictive, it leads to further complications in the addiction cycle as the body begins to crave the substance and responds (withdrawal symptoms) when the substance in question leaves the body.

The fourth reason addiction is gaining momentum is tolerance. Our bodies are amazing and complicated machines. If you are addicted to nicotine or alcohol, try to think back to the first time you smoked or drank. The taste was disgusting! You became nauseous and dizzy and your body produced all kinds of uncomfortable feelings. It did this because you poisoned it! It was a warning. Now nature is very clever. Your body over time assumes that if you keep poisoning it you are doing it because you have no other choice. So, for your convenience, it stops producing warning signs. This means you have to take more of it to get a “benefit” from your drug of choice. Your body then reacts again to warn you. You ignore the warning, so your body decides to stop warning you because it assumes you have no choice but to poison yourself, so you need to increase the dose. That’s called tolerance. Obviously, with each increase in dose, the body comes under more stress as it tries to cope. As the body becomes more and more stressed, our health and well-being become increasingly compromised. Another very painful downward spiral.

So now we come to the point where we can explore how to overcome an addiction. As mentioned earlier, it is not the addiction that is the difficulty; It is the addict’s perception of their addiction that presents the challenge. If the addict’s perception changed, the addiction could be overcome with relative ease. The addict feels helpless to overcome their addiction because they perceive their addictive behavior as valuable to them. This is denial. It is this denial that needs to be addressed, and then the addiction can be resolved because the addict can see clearly that the addiction is not serving them. In fact, it does the opposite. It destroys them. The strongest addiction is actually more psychological than physical. A physical addiction can usually be resolved after a few days of detoxification. If physical addiction were the strongest element of addiction then it would follow that after a few days of detoxification you would be free. As we all know, this is not the case. Psychological dependence is the root and is caused by faulty thinking and denial. Change the thinking and the addiction no longer exists because it is no longer “needed”.

If you think you are physically addicted please seek help as you may need a supervised detox program. With addictive behavior, the first step is to admit you have a problem. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to break an addiction. People hit rock bottom because they fear life without their addictive behavior so much that they continue with the behavior until they have nothing more. I promise you. A life without addiction is wonderful. It is wrong thinking that tells you otherwise!

There is often unresolved emotional pain behind addiction. If you have suffered any type of trauma in your past, please seek help to resolve it now. Avoiding emotional pain will not help you. You must learn to go through emotional pain. Don’t let your past dictate your future.

Addiction often masks a sense of aimlessness as well. Addiction can allow someone to step out of life and sit on the fence and just watch from afar. We all have skills and gifts that we can share with the world. You are no exception (although you may feel that way). Trust me you have a purpose. Decide today that you will commit to finding and living that purpose.

As I said before, addiction often masks emotional pain. If you have suffered trauma in the past, get help today to resolve that trauma and then resolve to make sense of your suffering. There are probably thousands of people who have suffered a similar trauma who could really benefit from your help, even if it’s just to hear your story.

Addiction also aggravates emotional pain. If you try to navigate life through the eyes of your addiction, you create more challenges for yourself. Their behavior creates feelings of helplessness and guilt. This has a fruitful effect on your self-esteem, which then needs to be further treated with your addiction of choice. Be kind to yourself. Try to remember things that used to bring you joy. Slowly introduce these things back into your life. And don’t beat yourself up if you try to quit and then relapse, because that will only make the journey harder.

Avena sativa
